Here’s the 3rd of my ABC’s of acting inspirational thoughts

3 | Always Be Contending

When you read about theatre history, you realize that drama was forged in the fire of conflict and debate. So, when actors are contending, or battling for what they want, they ignite into action and come to life. In class, actors come to understand emotionally and viscerally that the stage and the screen themselves are arenas where these battles for supremacy of opinion or need or power and need are enacted. When we understand how the use of the stage and screen communicates those battles, it can help us when we fight to win.  When we understand the character’s point of view and have identified with it, through the deep work that we do, when we explore their inner thoughts their secrets, as well as our own, the action really leads us. We come out of ourselves, we lose our self-consciousness and ultimately we win in our art.

Life is a battle – fight to win in your art. You might be competitive, but know this about yourself and use it in a positive manner. Contend with yourself to be the best that you can realistically be.

I have added some of my short films to this website. You can view them at Shorts & Documentaries.

Viewing Suggestions

Finished Gen V which features some of our Canadian actors and is outrageously violent and graphic.

I really enjoyed the actors’ work in The Burial. It was great to see Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx develop their relationship and the supporting cast were excellent.
