ABCs of acting inspirational thoughts

6 | Always Be Communicating

All art is based on communication and great acting happens between people who are communicating on a very deep level. Actors who are committed to being open learn early on that the connection to other actors is a lifeline and that learning how to communicate deeply with them is an essential part of training. When we’ve gone through exercises and scenes that encourage this intensity of contact we can bring that ability to every acting experience. We come to understand that, outside of a true-life love relationship, the open connection and communication is like no other. Communicating in acting requires absolute commitment to openness; eye contact, listening, honesty, trust, physical awareness and physical proximity. Once we’ve shared a moment, looked so deeply into another’s eyes, we have a bond forever. We can then be mutually open and respectful, spurring others and ourselves to go the distance – to be private in our thoughts, feelings and actions, and to bring truth to our characters and to stories we’re telling.

Viewing Recommendations

Baby Reindeer (Netflix)
An astounding series about trauma. Read how the creator/lead/writer transformed his one-man show into this series.
Shogun (Hulu/FX)
Profound subtext and listening by the Japanese cast.  The costumes and period detail are outstanding.
Fallout (Prime)
Great stuff from the young leads and Water Goggins.
Mr & Mrs Smith (Prime)An imaginative series with and by the multi-talented Donald Glover!
The Sympathizer (Max)
Incredible work by the whole cast.  Sandra Oh is wonderful and Robert Downey Jr. in four roles!
Hacks Season 3I’m also looking forward to this.
Anatomy of a Fall (Prime)
In film, I finally got to watch Anatomy of a Fall which is now on Prime – fantastic!

Let me know if you have any suggestions for me! Have a great rest of your summer.
